Between the Sarca valley and the slopes of Monte Stivo, this stage crosses some of the lesser-known but no less fascinating areas of Garda Trentino
Ceniga and Bolognano are only a few kilometers apart as the crow flies: the Medium Loop trail leads you to discover, with a detour, the peculiarities of this part of the territory, especially exploring the slopes of Monte Stivo.
Along the Sarca valley, following the Coste di Varino trail, just before climbing toward Drena and the Castle dominating the expanse of limestone boulders of the Marocche, the route passes near the gorge of Rio Sallagoni, where one of the most characteristic via ferratas of Garda Trentino rises.
Shortly before reaching Braila, the itinerary touches the Open Air Gallery, an artistic project that transforms the forest into an open-air art gallery. The area indeed houses many installations made with various recycled materials, creating a fantastic colorful world.
The route is usually passable all year round: only in the winter months is it sometimes possible to find snow along the path. For this reason, it is always advisable to check the trail conditions if you want to attempt it between November and March. In this period it is also recommended to verify the openings of refuges and accommodation facilities.

Along the route you cross numerous chestnut groves. These trees, cultivated for centuries, have represented an important source of sustenance.

From Ceniga you cross the Sarca valley and head towards the coste di Varino, that is the slopes of Monte Stivo, along country lanes. After passing the hamlet Maso Trenti, you start to climb towards Drena, dominated by the imposing castle; passing through the center, you head towards the hamlet Casina and from there, following the signs, you return to Braila. Then you climb towards Carobbi and Troiana, which you pass, and along a contour path you reach the ridge descending from Monte Stivo. A steep path leads to the Ir Valley just above Bolognano, which is reached on secondary lanes through the olive groves.
Dro and Ceniga are connected to the other Garda Trentino centers by suburban bus lines 205 (Riva del Garda – Sarche - Trento) and 204 (Riva del Garda – Cavedine - Trento).
From Arco follow the state road SS45bis towards Ceniga.
Free parking in Via Arco.
Mountain hikes require specific clothing and equipment. Even for relatively short and easy outings, it is always better to be well equipped to avoid unpleasant surprises and face unforeseen events such as a sudden storm or an energy drop.
What to bring for a mountain trek?
In the backpack (for a day hike, normally a 25/30L is recommended) it is good to bring:
Wear footwear suitable for the route and the season. The trail surface can be uneven or rough and a pair of boots will protect you from sprains. A grassy slope, a slab of rock or a steep path, if wet, can become dangerous without proper footwear.
Finally... don't forget the camera! It will be useful to capture the hike and the countless breathtaking views that Garda Trentino hides around every corner. If you want to share your memories with us, you can use the hashtag #GardaTrentino
